Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2025: Legends, Yes, But Not all Rock

This year’s nominations honor musical giants, but their inclusion raises a louder question: Has the Hall of Fame lost its grip on what rock truly is?

Rock and Roll hall of fame

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame once stood as a sacred monument, from Jimi Hendrix to Led Zeppelin, it honored the musicians who mastered their craft and went against popularity and mainstream to create something that was uniquely theirs. But in 2025, the Hall feels less like a shrine to rock’s rebellious spirit and more like a rotating playlist of Billboard-friendly nostalgia. By no means is this the overall opinion of rock and metal fans, this is our personal opinion and we suggest you take it with a pinch pf salt.

The 2025 Class: Who Made the List?

The list of nominees this year reads like a genre-agnostic tribute to musical excellence. Outkast, Maná, and Phish are just a few of the first-time nominees joining the ranks of Bad Company, The Black Crowes, Billy Idol, Soundgarden, and The White Stripes, who have previous nominations.

Let's be clear, every artist on this list is a legend in their own right. Mariah Carey is a vocal powerhouse, Outkast reshaped the landscape of hip-hop, Maná are titans in Latin music, and Phish built a live performance empire that rivals the Grateful Dead. But here’s the deal: being legendary doesn’t mean you belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

RnB have their own hall of fame, so does Hip Hop, hell there is even a Polka hall of fame. Currently there are no rock or metal bands inducted into the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame and the closest rock induction into the Hip Hop hall of fame is where artists like Grandmaster Flash, Run-DMC, Public Enemy, and OutKast have collaborated on rock tracks with existing rock bands.

What Even Is “Rock” Anymore?

If the Hall is going to ignore genre lines, then it needs a new name. Because “Rock” used to mean something different: Guitarists that could tame the most difficult scales, drummers that made audiences believe they had 8 arms, and front men (or women) who commanded armies with nothing but their raw voice. Rock wasn’t just sound, it was attitude. It was rebellion, grit, sweat, and danger and saying Fuck you to the mainstream.

When we talk about real rock, we’re talking about musicians who didn't need autotune to hit insane notes or strum the same three chords in different keys. Rock was once the music of the outcasts, the rebels, the misfits. Now? It’s being curated like a polite Spotify playlist for boomers.

Why Some Fans and Artists Have Had Enough

Increasingly, rock purists, and even artists themselves, are pushing back. The Sex Pistols famously snubbed the Hall, calling it a "piss stain." Axl Rose refused to attend Guns N’ Roses’ induction. And more recently, Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails admitted he didn’t even want the honor until he realised the fans might appreciate it more than he did. These aren’t isolated moments. They're symptoms of a growing disillusionment. For many artists, the Rock Hall simply isn’t a goal anymore, not because they don’t value recognition, but because the recognition feels hollow when it’s handed out like a lifetime achievement award at the Grammys rather than a coronation of rock royalty.

The Hall has always been political. It has long faced criticism for gatekeeping, industry favoritism, and ignoring crucial subgenres like metal and punk for decades. But now, in its effort to be more inclusive and culturally broad, it’s veering into territory where the only criterion seems to be fame, popularity and stream count, not fidelity to the spirit of rock and roll.

What’s next? Do we induct Taylor Swift? Drake? Beyoncé? Again, all icons in their own right and genre. All incredible artists. But are they rock?

This is a Call to Remember What Rock Stands For

This isn’t about snobbery. It’s about identity. If the Hall of Fame is truly meant to honor “Rock and Roll,” then it owes it to the genre to respect its roots, and its branches. That includes metal. That includes punk. That includes experimental, raw, underground bands who may never hit Top 40 but carry the torch of rock louder and more proudly than anyone on this year’s list. We’re not saying Mariah Carey doesn’t deserve a museum wing. She absolutely does, just at the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame or at the Pop Music Hall of Fame (if only it existed). But when you throw the doors open to every genre, you dilute the meaning of the award. And when everything is rock, then nothing is.

Respect the Legends, But Respect the Genre Too

The Hall of Fame is at a crossroads. It can continue expanding its reach until it becomes a generic monument to musical popularity, or it can double down on what made it matter in the first place, honoring the raw, loud, ferocious energy of rock and roll and expand into the numerous sub genres and throw in metal as well. In 2025, we’re not just arguing over nominations. We’re fighting to preserve the soul of a genre that changed the world. And if the Hall won’t draw the line, then maybe it’s time fans do.

Again this is our view, we understand that not everyone agrees, bit that is what the Arena is about, no bullshit, tell it like it is content.
