Marilyn Manson Narrowly Misses Charting his First No.1 hit

The shock rocker’s latest single claws into the charts—but the No. 1 spot remains just out of reach, again

Marilyn Manson’s long-standing war with the charts rages on, and once again, the self-proclaimed Antichrist Superstar walks away without a No. 1 hit to his name, missing it by the slimmest of margins.

His latest offering, a dark, brooding cover of Phil Collins’ In the Air Tonight is a bold swing, soaked in atmosphere and menace. The track made a splash, debuting at No. 10 on Billboard’s Hard Rock Digital Song Sales chart. But despite the buzz, the crown once again eludes him. It’s a familiar story for Manson, whose career has been as controversial as it is iconic.

This isn’t his first near-miss. In 2024, he dropped As Sick as the Secrets Within, which hit No. 1 on the same chart, followed by Raise the Red Flag, which landed at No. 2. But none of these tracks, original or cover, have cracked the official singles chart. Manson's been skating around the summit for years, but never planting his flag. In 2020, he peaked at No. 2 with his version of the American folk song "God’s Gonna Cut You Down."

His most recent album, One Assassination Under God – Chapter 1, launched last November and climbed to No. 2 on the UK’s Official Rock & Metal Albums chart, just behind Linkin Park’s From Zero. Even across the Atlantic, he can’t quite muscle past the competition.

All of this comes after a long silence following serious abuse allegations that surfaced in 2021. After a lengthy investigation that kicked off in 2021, the Los Angeles County District Attorney finally closed the case in early 2025. Their verdict? No criminal charges. Why? According to the DA, some of the accusations were too old to prosecute, and the rest didn’t have enough solid evidence to hold up in court.

Manson’s re-entry into the music world hasn’t been subtle, new music, a deal with Nuclear Blast, and now this cover that drips with foreboding and defiance. Like him or loathe him, people are still paying attention.

This May, he hits the road for a U.S. headlining tour, his first in six years. Whether it’s a redemption arc or just another twisted chapter, one thing’s for sure: Manson’s not done yet.

But until he finally secures that elusive No. 1 across the board, he remains rock’s eternal outsider, dangerous, defiant, and still lurking just outside the gates of chart royalty. After years in the fire, he's back in the studio, back on stage, and still swinging. No convictions. No apologies. Just a legacy soaked in controversy and a will to burn through the noise. Whether the charts crown him or not, neither Manson nor his fans need a No. 1 hit to remind the world that he never bowed to it in the first place.
